Looks like it's covered by a plug in the bumper. My old Mazdaspeed 6 had a similar tow hook in the rear bumper that came in handy in situations where awd & snow tires couldn't overcome low ground clearance.

Yeah, I think 99% of cars are like that now, or they're incorporated into the grille somehow like on the wife's CX-9. All the better for aero, and better to pull from the bumper reinforcement behind the plastic, than underneath.
